Sangamneri Goat Improvement Project (SGIP)

From paper registers to decision intelligence — one verified record of every animal, from the field to the Director’s desk. An AI-based decision-support platform for the AICRP on Goat at MPKV Rahuri.

Why SGIP exists

Sangamneri breed improvement never lacked field effort — it lacked a trustworthy record

SGIP replaces scattered registers and spreadsheets with one auditable data spine, built for the All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Goat, Sangamneri Field Unit, at Mahatma Phule Krishi Vidyapeeth, Rahuri, under ICAR coordination.

01 · PROBLEM

Data that never arrives

Field observations lived in notebooks, WhatsApp photos, and personal spreadsheets — arriving late, partial, and impossible to audit. Duplicate animal identities and pedigree gaps broke genetic evaluation outright, and months passed between field capture and a usable report.

02 · CHANGE

One verified spine

SGIP captures each observation once, offline, against a tagged animal — then validates it with biological plausibility checks at the moment of entry, hash-chains it, and syncs it into a single institutional record with a tamper-evident trail from ear tag to executive report.

03 · BENEFIT

Decisions you can defend

Selection, mating, and scheme allocation stop being opinion. Reviewers see the same numbers the field entered, with provenance attached — genetic evaluation on complete pedigrees, review-ready reporting without re-entry, and farmer-visible records that build trust in the cluster.

Platform capabilities

What the platform does

Offline-first capture

Enumerators record flock data on site, in the village, with no assumption of connectivity — syncing when a connection returns.

Pedigree & breeding

Parentage and lineage linkage against tagged animals, giving the field unit the pedigree evidence to select, mate, and conserve deliberately.

Genetic evaluation

Evaluation run on complete, clean pedigrees rather than the partial records that previously made it unreliable.

AI

Computer vision

Computer vision built into the capture pipeline as part of the platform’s AI-based decision support.

Tamper-evident audit trail

Hash-chained records give a verifiable provenance trail from the ear tag in the field to the executive report on the Director’s desk.

Farmer channel

Farmer-visible records, so the households whose flocks are being recorded can see their own data — building trust across the cluster.

Executive reporting

Review-ready reporting for scientists and reviewers, produced from field-entered data without a single re-entry.

Scheme linkage

Linkage to scheme allocation, including breed development units established under the National Livestock Mission subsidy scheme.

The breed

Sangamneri — a Maharashtra breed worth defending

Prized for dual-purpose milk and meat performance and its hardiness in the Ahmednagar–Nashik belt, the Sangamneri flock has been thinning under unrecorded crossbreeding. SGIP gives the field unit the pedigree evidence to reverse that deliberately.

In a signed certificate dated 5 August 2026, the project’s Principal Investigator and Co-Principal Investigator confirm the assignment “was found to be of good quality and professionally executed,” and “completed within the agreed scope and timelines.”
